Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley made a surprise appearance during the 8 News Now 6 p.m. newscast Tuesday to honor anchor Denise Valdez ahead of her retirement. Berkley proclaimed Oct. 20, 2026, as Denise Valdez Day in the city.
"Let me tell you what a bittersweet moment this is for all of us in Las Vegas," Berkley said. "You have educated us, you have comforted us, you have informed us over all these many years. You will be greatly missed, especially by me!"
The mayor added she could not believe she would not see Valdez every day, calling that the bitter part, while the sweet part is a whole new life for the anchor. In September, Clark County Commissioners also honored Valdez with a proclamation for Denise Valdez Day.
Valdez began working at Channel 8 in 2006 and has won five Emmy awards during her tenure, including two for best anchor in the Pacific Southwest Region. She was also recognized for educational reports highlighting positive programs in Clark County Schools and for breaking news coverage.
Valdez's final newscast on 8 News Now is scheduled for Oct. 22.
