Clark County to hire more crossing guards with $715K contract boost

Clark County will spend an additional $715,557 each year to hire more crossing guards after the Board of County Commissioners voted Tuesday to amend an existing contract. The change brings the total value of the agreement to nearly $64 million for services that began in July 2025 and can be renewed through 2035.

County officials said the move prioritizes the safety of children traveling to and from school and ensures guards are available when schools request them. A spokesperson could not provide details Tuesday evening on how many guards will be hired, where they will be stationed, or when they will start.

The funding increase comes as local municipalities expand crossing guard programs in response to a rise in students hit by vehicles. Clark County School District police data shows 122 students have been struck since the school year began Aug. 10, while 432 were hit during the previous school year.

Krista Holloway, founder of the advocacy group Walk Safely LV, called the investment "amazing" for student safety. She said crossing guards make drivers more aware of child pedestrians and help parents and students feel safer, adding, "There's a lot of concerned parents out there because these drivers are not getting any better."
