Las Vegas Arts District intersection to remain partially closed tied to storm drain project

Commerce Street south of Charleston Boulevard in the downtown Arts District will remain closed for at least another month as work continues on the $49 million Charleston storm drain project. The city of Las Vegas announced Thursday that a planned reopening for Monday has been canceled.

The street was closed last month so crews could install underground box culverts. Officials said the continuous closure will allow paving and concrete work for maintenance holes to proceed more quickly than if the street were reopened temporarily and closed again later.

During the extended closure, Commerce Street will remain open with one lane in each direction between California Avenue and Charleston Boulevard to maintain business access. The street normally carries southbound traffic only.

Work hours are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Charleston Boulevard is reduced to one lane in each direction at the Commerce intersection. The city recommends Oakey Boulevard and Bonneville Avenue for east-west detours, and Casino Center Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard for north-south travel.

The storm drain project began in August 2025 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. It will upgrade drainage infrastructure between Maryland Parkway and Commerce Street.
