Del Sol senior Arthur Gonzales has been voted the Nevada Preps Boys Athlete of the Week for the period of Oct. 12-17. The announcement was made Wednesday, with voting having closed at noon Thursday and results reported Friday.
Gonzales earned the honor after a standout performance on the football field Friday, when he rushed for 188 yards and three touchdowns. The senior quarterback also completed seven of nine passes for 87 yards to lead the Dragons to a 43-20 victory over Cheyenne.
The weekly poll featured four nominees who posted notable performances during the week. Among the other candidates, a senior forward recorded three goals Tuesday to help Sunrise Mountain defeat Chaparral 5-2, while a senior midfielder scored three goals in a 4-0 win over Las Vegas on Thursday and leads his team with 11 goals this season.
The fourth nominee was a freshman who won the Coaches Association Invitational 5-kilometer Open Boys Division race Saturday at Wildhorse Golf Club with a time of 18 minutes, 29 seconds. His Mustangs team claimed the top 12 spots to win the team title and also took second place in the varsity race.
