More October showers coming to Las Vegas Valley

Southern Nevada is bracing for another round of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday and Thursday, less than two weeks after the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel dumped record-setting rainfall on the valley. The National Weather Service says a Pacific storm will bring a "surge of moisture" into the Southwest, though forecasters do not expect a repeat of the Oct. 11 deluge that dropped more than an inch of rain at Harry Reid International Airport.

Meteorologist Sam Meltzer said the valley is forecast to receive less than 0.25 inches of rain from this system. Rain chances stand at 30 percent Wednesday night, rising to 60 percent Thursday morning and 80 percent by Thursday afternoon. Friday is expected to be dry for most of the area, with daytime highs dropping from 81 degrees Wednesday to the low 70s by week's end.

The recent wet weather has pushed October rainfall at Reid to 1.19 inches, well above the monthly average of 0.32 inches. However, the yearly total of 2.18 inches remains below the normal 3.31 inches through mid-October. The wettest October on record remains 2005 with 1.45 inches. Official record-keeping began in 1937.

Meanwhile, strong winds expected Thursday and Friday have prompted a dust advisory from the Clark County Division of Air Quality. A flood watch is in effect for most of Arizona and parts of Southern Utah during the storm's peak. Tuesday's high at Reid reached only 64 degrees, about 20 degrees below normal.
