President Trump made a stop in Wasilla, Alaska, to rally for Republican Senator Dan Sullivan, who is seeking a third term against Democrat Mary Peltola. The visit is part of a western swing that also includes rallies in Arizona and Montana. Trump noted he flew eight hours to attend the event, calling Sullivan 'one of the best and most respected senators in D.C.'
During the rally, Trump announced that Taiwan would purchase gas from a proposed mega-gas project in Alaska and invest more than $4 billion, though there was no immediate confirmation from Taiwan. He also said the Federal Communications Commission would vote in the coming weeks on an additional $162 million to expand high-speed internet access in Alaska.
Trump announced pardons for two men who had pleaded guilty in 2022 to Clean Air Act violations for tampering with federally mandated monitoring devices on certain vehicles. He also referenced a previously announced $54 billion investment by South Korea’s government into the Alaska gas project, noting that South Korea has not finalized the deal or its total value.
Alaska has not elected a Democratic senator since 2008 or a Democratic governor since 1998, and the state last voted for a Democratic president in 1964. Despite this, Trump’s approval ratings in Alaska have declined, mirroring national trends, according to pollster Ivan Moore, who said the Senate race may depend on Trump 2024 voters who are now uncertain in their support.
