Prosecutors allege couple defrauded Lutheran Social Services, bankrupting the nonprofit

Prosecutors have indicted Tim and Michele Bedwell on charges of defrauding Lutheran Social Services of Nevada, an alleged scheme that led to the nonprofit's bankruptcy. Chief Deputy District Attorney Eckley Keach announced Friday that each faces one count of comprehensive theft between $25,000 and $100,000.

"This case arose from an ongoing, multi-year embezzlement scheme involving both Tim and his wife Michele Bedwell, where they ultimately defrauded the Lutheran Social Services of Nevada of thousands of dollars, ultimately leading to the subsequent winding down and bankruptcy of that organization," Keach said. "The nature of this fraud is quite offensive."

Tim Bedwell served as the organization's CEO. The couple has been the subject of prior investigative reporting by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, which examined questions regarding payments made to Michele Bedwell.
