Trump replaces Susie Wiles with Stephen Miller as chief of staff after GOP’s midterm defeat

President Donald Trump announced Friday that Stephen Miller will replace Susie Wiles as White House chief of staff, a move that comes days after Republicans lost control of Congress in the midterm elections. Trump made the announcement on his social media site, praising Wiles and stating she would continue to work for his political organization.

Wiles, 69, released a statement shortly after the announcement calling her service "the honor of a lifetime" and noting her pride in accomplishments including securing the border, cutting taxes, and strengthening the economy. She added that her commitment to "the President and the mission" would not change. Wiles was the first woman to serve as White House chief of staff and the longest-serving chief of staff during Trump's presidency.

Miller, a longtime Trump adviser who joined the 2016 campaign as a speechwriter, currently serves as deputy chief of staff. He is a key architect of the administration's hard-line immigration policies and previously worked for former Sen. Jeff Sessions. Wiles, a veteran Florida operative, was credited with running Trump's most disciplined presidential campaign in 2024 and brought order to his White House operation. Her departure follows months after she announced she no longer showed evidence of breast cancer following treatment she disclosed in March 2026.
