Nye County manager reinstates sheriff’s access to police databases

Nye County Manager Brett Waggoner reinstated Sheriff Joe McGill’s access to law enforcement databases this week after a state investigation found that Sheriff’s Office employees failed to document over 100 searches for personal information. Waggoner said he made the decision to reinstate access based on the state’s corrective action plan, which requires the Sheriff’s Office to retrain employees and participate in quarterly meetings with the Department of Public Safety.

McGill had been blocked from the databases since April following accusations of misuse. Waggoner stated in an emailed statement that he ordered IT Director Brad Adams to reinstate McGill’s access, saying, “The decision to reinstate was made by myself as County Manager to instruct Brad Adams to reinstate his access.”

State officials found that office employees failed to properly document 102 searches in the Criminal Justice Information System databases, which contain criminal histories, DMV records, property information, and warrants. McGill has maintained that all his searches were for law enforcement purposes and said his office has been 100 percent cooperative with the state.

Unauthorized use of these databases can result in sanctions and may be considered a misdemeanor in Nevada. State officials have said McGill, who is up for re-election in November, was not under criminal investigation for his searches.
