NFL suspends Bills’ C.J. Gardner-Johnson for spitting at Raiders

The NFL suspended Buffalo Bills safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson for one game without pay on Monday for spitting in the direction of Las Vegas Raiders players during Sunday's game in Orchard Park, N.Y. The league cited its rule against "any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship."

Gardner-Johnson was ejected late in the second quarter for unsportsmanlike conduct after an exchange with a group of Raiders players that included tight end Brock Bowers. The Bills went on to win 33-30, improving to 5-1 heading into their bye week.

The suspension begins Oct. 26 and runs through Nov. 2, a day after Buffalo hosts the Baltimore Ravens. Gardner-Johnson has the right to appeal.

Following the game, Gardner-Johnson apologized to his teammates and later posted a similar message on social media. "I owe my teammates an apology and to be a man about it," he said. "You got to understand that as a grown man you can't be doing (stuff) like that in a game. As a vet, I'll be better. I'll take my consequences as it is, handle it like a man and move on." The 28-year-old, who won a Super Bowl with the 2024 Philadelphia Eagles, signed a one-year contract with Buffalo in March.
