Man-made lake proposed in luxury development near Red Rock Canyon

The Clark County Planning Commission will vote Tuesday evening on a zoning amendment that would permit a man-made lake at the Reserve at Red Rock Canyon, a luxury home development on the former Bonnie Springs Ranch property just south of Spring Mountain Ranch State Park and adjacent to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.

The amendment would allow man-made lakes for "fire suppression and life safety purposes," but county planning staff have recommended denial of the request. Save Red Rock, a longtime advocacy group opposing development in the area, is also fighting the change.

The group argues the proposal lacks standards for a lake's size, design or water source, and conflicts with county water conservation policies. "Clark County is considering a rule change that would allow man-made lakes in places where county policy has kept them out for good reason: we live in a desert, and water here is scarce," Save Red Rock stated on its website.

A spokesperson for Save Red Rock said the group has no additional comments at this time but may revisit its position depending on the outcome of Tuesday's 7 p.m. hearing. The Reserve at Red Rock Canyon's website lists no contact information beyond a sales inquiry form and markets the property with the tagline, "An address this rare transcends legendary."
