A Las Vegas man who pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his father during a dispute at an east valley apartment complex was sentenced Wednesday to two to five years in prison. Bishop Deshotel, 22, entered the plea to voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon on Aug. 26, according to court records.
District Judge Michelle Leavitt also imposed a suspended period of probation not to exceed three years. The shooting occurred in June at an apartment complex near East Sahara and South Eastern Avenues where Deshotel lived with his grandmother.
According to a Metropolitan Police Department arrest report, Peter Deshotel, 49, had moved into the apartment and was awakened by an argument involving his son. After the father intervened, the two got into a fight. Police said Peter Deshotel grabbed brass knuckles described as having spikes.
Bishop Deshotel told police he retrieved a gun from under his pillow and tried to leave, but his father followed him to the doorway and tried to grab the weapon. During the struggle for the gun, Peter Deshotel was shot twice. He was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he died.
