Las Vegas residents Felicia and Ben Horowitz are donating $150 million to help build Nevada's first standalone children's hospital, a gift Intermountain Health says is among the largest publicly announced donations to a children's hospital in the United States. The facility will be named the Intermountain Health Felicia and Ben Horowitz Children's Hospital.
The more than $1 billion project is expected to break ground in late October on roughly 34 acres at UNLV's Harry Reid Research and Technology Park in the southwest valley. Plans call for the hospital to open with about 200 beds and 2,000 to 3,000 caregivers.
Ben Horowitz is the co-founder of venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. Felicia Horowitz leads the Horowitz Family Foundation and founded The Paid in Full Foundation, a nonprofit supporting hip-hop artists.
The Horowitz gift follows other major local contributions. In early October, Las Vegas homebuilder Larry Canarelli and his wife Heidi pledged $50 million, earning naming rights for a hospital tower. In August, the Las Vegas Raiders donated $25 million, the largest gift in team history, composed of $10 million from the organization and $5 million each from owners Mark Davis, Egon Durban and Michael Meldman.
MGM Resorts International President and CEO Bill Hornbuckle and his wife Wendy were named last year as co-chairs of the Nevada Campaign for Kids, the philanthropic effort supporting the hospital's construction.
