An ICE agent identified as Castro has been indicted on six counts related to allegations he lied about shooting a Venezuelan man during a crackdown, CBS reported.
According to the report, a federal grand jury returned the indictment on Wednesday. Officials said the indictment will be made public once Castro is in custody.
The charges stem from Texas’ refusal to extradite Castro to Minnesota, where he faces separate accusations of assault and false reporting concerning the shooting incident.
Castro was arrested in Texas in May and held for three months.
He was among thousands of immigration officers deployed to Minnesota for Operation Metro Surge, a mission that triggered intense protests and led to the deaths of two U.S. citizens at the hands of agents during confrontations.
Initially, Alfredo Alejandro Aljorna and Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis — the latter wounded in the leg but survived — were charged with forcibly assaulting, resisting or impeding federal officers.
Surveillance footage later prompted questions about the official narrative, prompting federal prosecutors to review the agents’ conduct.
In February, ICE stated that two immigration agents might have made "untruthful statements" regarding the shooting; both were placed on administrative leave.
Subsequently, the charges against Aljorna and Sosa-Celis were dismissed after prosecutors cited "newly discovered evidence," CBS noted.
