Disneyland has confirmed it will convert its classic Autopia attraction to electric vehicles after 71 years of gas-powered operation. The change comes to comply with a California Air Resources Board mandate aimed at reducing air pollution, with a February 1 deadline for implementation.
Autopia opened with the park in 1955 and remains one of the few original Tomorrowland attractions. Disney Legend Bob Gurr, who designed the ride, told The New York Times the new system will be electric but not use conventional car batteries, describing it as "very different."
Gurr said he has advocated for an electric conversion since 2000, arguing the gas engines harmed both the guest experience and the environment. "The dirtiest place on Earth is the Autopia attraction at Disneyland in the city of Anaheim," Gurr told the Times.
Honda will continue as the ride's sponsor through early 2027 under its current agreement. A Honda spokesperson said discussions about the future of the partnership are ongoing.
