Scary weather: Torrential Halloween rain prompts flood warning

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Saturday night for much of the Las Vegas Valley, including Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Centennial Hills, Summerlin, Aliante, Lone Mountain, North Las Vegas Airport and Floyd Lamb Park. The warning took effect around 6:20 p.m. and lasted until about 9:15 p.m. as Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area.

Between 0.25 and 0.75 inches of rain had fallen by early evening, and the weather service reported that flash flooding was ongoing or expected to begin shortly. Trick-or-treaters who ventured out were seen carrying umbrellas as they went door to door in the downpour.

Earlier in the day, a flood advisory was issued for the southeast valley after 0.50 inches of rain fell in a 30-minute span just after noon. The rainfall marked the first measurable precipitation on Halloween in the valley since 1987, when a quarter of an inch was recorded.

The storm arrived less than two weeks after the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel produced record-setting rainfall in the region. Las Vegas has already broken the daily rainfall record and tied an all-time monthly record for October because of that earlier system.
