Valley of Fire hike boasts breathtaking beauty, hidden gems

Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada's first state park since 1934, sits about an hour northeast of Las Vegas off Interstate 15. The park now sees at least 750,000 visitors a year drawn to its trails, rock formations, petroglyph panels, petrified trees, historic cabins and movie set remnants.

A $30 million visitor center opened a year ago to accommodate the growing crowds. Park officials recommend arriving early to secure parking near popular trailheads. Construction at the main west entrance requires visitors to use the east entrance Mondays through Thursdays through 2026, though both entrances are open Fridays through Sundays.

Parking Lot 3 provides access to the Seven Wonders Loop, a moderately strenuous 2-mile hike that incorporates the Fire Wave trail. The Fire Wave features a short, steep descent at the start that can challenge unsure footing, but starting there is considered the easiest approach for first-timers on the loop.

The loop continues past Gibraltar Rock and through striated red and white sandstone formations before entering Pink Canyon, a short slot canyon with water-carved bends. Hikers cross White Domes Road via a painted crosswalk and pass through a second slot canyon before following a gravelly wash system past monoliths and layered hills.

The trail is mostly sun-exposed and off-limits in summer because of extreme heat, making fall weather ideal for the hike. Willows, catclaw acacias and desert milkweeds provide sparse greenery along the route, which eventually leads to a metal sign pointing toward higher ground.
