The grand opening for the new $10 million Nevada State Veterans Memorial in northwest Las Vegas is scheduled for Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the Thunderbird Family Sports Complex, 6105 N. Durango Drive. The ceremony coincides with Veterans Day and will feature a flyover courtesy of Nellis Air Force Base, though the city did not specify the type of aircraft involved.

The event will also include a presentation of the colors by the Joint Armed Forces Color Guard. The memorial's centerpieces are 18 bronze statues representing military members from different conflicts throughout American history. Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske noted the statues previously stood at a memorial at the former Grant Sawyer Building and were stored by the state before being moved to their new location in her ward.

The project is a partnership between the city of Las Vegas and the state of Nevada. Fundraising was handled by the Mayor's Fund for Las Vegas LIFE, a nonprofit established in 2017 by former Mayor Carolyn Goodman to raise private-sector money for city projects. In addition to the statues, the memorial includes an open-air promenade, an amphitheater, and educational materials honoring more than 200,000 veterans in the state.

Construction on the memorial began earlier this year. The city said the facility will serve as a tribute to Nevada's veterans and provide a gathering place for the community.
