Tropical Storm Rachel to bring rain to Las Vegas area this weekend

Las Vegas is forecast to reach a high of 96 degrees Friday, nearing the record of 97 set in 2024, after tying the record high of 98 on Thursday. Sunny skies will persist through the afternoon with a few clouds over the mountains before conditions shift Saturday.

Saturday will serve as a transition day, starting sunny before clouds and wind take over. Gusts up to 40 mph are expected, with rain chances increasing after midnight into Sunday. The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for western Clark County and much of Nye and Lincoln Counties from 2 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday, though no wind alerts are in effect for Las Vegas.

Tropical Storm Rachel is predicted to make landfall late Saturday into early Sunday along the northern west coast of the Baja Peninsula, potentially dropping 3 to 5 inches of rain there. The storm's path may continue toward south-southwest Utah by Sunday evening.

Widespread rain is expected across the region mainly on Sunday, potentially lingering into Monday and Tuesday. Forecast models suggest Las Vegas could receive more than half an inch of rain by 5 p.m. Sunday. No flood alerts are currently active for the area, though hydrologic outlooks have been posted for burn-scarred wildfire areas in regions covered by the Elko and Salt Lake City weather offices.

An Extreme Heat Warning for Death Valley National Park remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday. Normal high and low temperatures for this date are 84 and 63 degrees.
