The Road to Las Vegas: Review-Journal’s Week 6 CFP projections

The Las Vegas Review-Journal released its Week 6 College Football Playoff projections, selecting the four teams most likely to reach the semifinals ahead of the national title game at Allegiant Stadium on Jan. 25. Notre Dame remains in the mix after a 58-7 blowout win over Stanford, with Jonaz Walton and Nolan James Jr. each rushing for two touchdowns as the Irish gained 360 yards on the ground. The Review-Journal noted the Irish could face a test next week at BYU, though the Cougars have not played a strong schedule.

Georgia solidified its spot in the projections with a 20-17 road win at Alabama, escaping Tuscaloosa despite the Crimson Tide entering as favorites. The Bulldogs’ defense was praised, and Gunner Stockton’s experience in big games was called a valuable asset. Dwight Phillips had his most extensive season action, rushing for 120 yards on 17 carries. The Review-Journal noted Georgia’s path remains clear until a Nov. 7 game at Ole Miss.

Texas remains outside the top four projections after its 27-24 walkoff loss to Oklahoma, a game described as coming down to dueling kickers in the final minutes. The Review-Journal said the Longhorns had too many 'land mines' on their schedule and that the loss pushed them further from the rankings. Meanwhile, UNLV defeated North Dakota State at Allegiant Stadium, shutting out the Bison in the second half to secure a key Mountain West win. The Rebels were described as the more physical side against the previously unbeaten Bison, who suffered their first defeat of the season.

The Review-Journal also noted the Big 12 race to watch, suggesting that if BYU loses to Notre Dame, Utah and Texas Tech could meet as undefeated teams in the conference title game, with the winner having a strong argument for a top-four seed. Miami remains in the projections for now after a bye, but the Review-Journal warned the Hurricanes may not withstand a potential loss to Notre Dame if an undefeated Big 12 team emerges. Indiana survived a late rally against Nebraska and Anthony Colandrea, setting up a pivotal showdown with Ohio State.
