Bishop Gorman’s matchup with St. John Bosco has drawn nationwide attention as the second week of high‑school football gets underway in Southern Nevada. After a chaotic opening weekend marked by lightning‑induced postponements, several storylines are emerging for Week 2.
**Week 1 makeup**
Ten games were not played or completed last Friday because of weather delays. Centennial held a 7‑0 lead over Coronado when the contest was halted; the Gaels will now travel to Cathedral Catholic in California while Coronado hosts Lancaster. Las Vegas High led Eldorado 33‑14 at halftime before the game was called, setting up a meeting with Desert Pines. Durango trailed Spring Valley 27‑6 at the break and will face Shadow Ridge on Friday. Green Valley’s opener against Foothill never started, and the Gators will take on Canyon Springs later in the day. Sunrise Mountain (32‑0 over Western) and Bonanza (10‑7 at Chaparral) were both ahead when their games were suspended; they will meet each other Friday. Forecasts call for temperatures near 103 degrees at 6 p.m., mostly sunny with a 10 percent chance of rain.
**State‑title rematch**
Saturday’s slate features a rematch of last year’s Class 4A state championship. Sloan Canyon will host McQueen at 1 p.m. in UNR’s Mackay Stadium. In the November finale at Allegiant Stadium, Sloan Canyon entered the fourth quarter ahead 20‑13, but McQueen scored twice in the period and clinched the title with a game‑winning drive that ended with 1:35 remaining. Sloan Canyon’s opener versus Central East (Fresno, Calif.) was halted after the first quarter with the Pirates leading 14‑7. The squad returns 39 players from last year’s 4A Southern Region championship team, including quarterback Cade Hoshino, receiver Brandon Quaglio and running back Jermaine Wilson Jr. McQueen has promoted to 5A after finishing first in the 4A Northern League a year ago; the Lancers bring back quarterback Ryder Tucker, who accumulated 2,357 passing yards and 33 touchdowns.
**Rivalry renewals**
An early bye week allowed Sierra Vista and Desert Oasis to reschedule their annual “Bell Game,” also known as the Railroad Rivalry, after lightning forced the postponement from the previous Friday. Both squads had an open slot for Week 2 and agreed to play the contest this week. Sierra Vista has won the last two meetings, beating Desert Oasis 21‑15 in 2024 and 23‑16 in 2025; the game was not held in 2023. Desert Oasis (Division I) and Sierra Vista (Division II) each aim to contend for the Superintendents Cup in their respective CCSD independent divisions.
Elsewhere, Foothill’s postponed opener against Green Valley remains uncertain, but the Falcons will host Basic at 6 p.m. Friday in the “Battle of Boulder Highway.” The two schools lie within a 10‑minute drive of each other along Boulder Highway. Basic, which went 0‑10 last season, will begin its campaign under quarterback Ryder Dobbs, whom coaches expect to showcase one of the top offenses among CCSD independent teams.
