GB's Hunt wins European 100m gold

Amy Hunt captured the European 100 metres title at the Championships in Birmingham, delivering Great Britain’s opening gold with a winning time of 11.00 seconds. The 24‑year‑old, who broke the 11‑second barrier for the first time this season, moved from fifth to first in the second half of the race, sealing the victory with her trademark strong finish. Hunt’s triumph adds to a medal haul that began earlier this year with a silver in the 200 metres at the Tokyo Olympics – her first senior individual global podium – and continued two weeks ago when she claimed Commonwealth 100 metres silver. She still has up to three further chances to increase her tally on home soil, contesting the 200 metres and both the women’s and mixed 4×100 metre relays later in the championships. Defending champion Dina Asher‑Smith, aiming for a seventh gold that would tie her for the most successful athlete in the event’s history, finished fifth in 11.10 seconds. Poland’s Ewa Swoboda took silver in 11.02 seconds and Belgium’s Delphine Nkansa claimed bronze in 11.06 seconds.
