The College Football Playoff selection committee will convene at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas, on Nov. 3 to release its first of six weekly rankings, culminating in the final 12-team field on Dec. 6. The national championship game is scheduled for Jan. 25 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The CFP invited a handful of media members, including a Review-Journal reporter, to participate in a mock selection using the new format for the 2025 season. Under the revised rules, the four power conference champions and the highest-ranked Group of 6 team receive automatic bids, while Notre Dame qualifies automatically if ranked in the top 12. The remaining spots go to the highest-ranked teams without automatic bids.
Committee members begin by privately submitting a list of 30 teams for consideration; any team receiving votes from at least three members enters the eligible pool. In the mock exercise, 41 teams qualified. Rankings are then built in groups of six, starting with the top six vote-getters.
The reporter described the process as tiresome, involving hours of discussion that do not always produce unanimous agreement. With the field doubling in size, those internal deliberations are expected to become even longer.
