Chelsea are in talks to sign Brighton & Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck, with the 35-year-old keen to join new manager Xabi Alonso at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea are in advanced negotiations to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, according to sources. The 35‑year‑old forward has expressed interest in moving to Stamford Bridge to work under incoming head coach Xabi Alonso. Chelsea’s pursuit reflects a reassessment of their transfer strategy; owner Behdad Eghbali remarked in April that the club’s emphasis on recruiting young talent requires a "tweak". Welbeck is viewed as a potential solution, described by the club as a "bully fit" for the squad. In the 2023‑24 campaign Welbeck netted a career‑high 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton, raising his total to 51 goals in 201 matches since his arrival from Watford in 2020. Brighton have declined to comment on the talks. Welbeck agreed to a 12‑month contract extension in March, which keeps him under contract through the conclusion of the 2026‑27 season.
