Bishop Gorman, Faith Lutheran set for rematch in 5A girls volleyball state final

Bishop Gorman advanced to the 5A state final with a four-set win over Bishop Manogue, 25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-17, at UNR's Virginia Street Gym. The Gaels are seeking their fourth consecutive state title, which would make them the first girls volleyball program in Nevada's largest classification to achieve a four-peat.

Gorman coach Gregg Nunley said the team pulled away in the fourth set by returning to basics. "Sometimes it just goes back to the basics: serving and passing. And so just reminding them of the basics and our game plan—stick to the game plan and things will go well," Nunley said. He noted the atmosphere was far more intense than when the teams met earlier in the season.

Faith Lutheran earned its spot with a three-set sweep of Carson, 25-20, 25-15, 25-23. The Crusaders rallied from an 18-11 deficit in the third set, scoring the final five points to close out the match. Abby Bunyan led Faith Lutheran with 15 kills.

Faith Lutheran coach Amy Fisher said the team's regional final victory over Bishop Gorman last week provided a confidence boost. "The biggest thing is, before that match last Saturday, we believed we could beat them, but now we know we can beat them," Fisher said. The championship match is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday.
