The Athletics are introducing Cam Castro as their new general manager Thursday. Castro, most recently the Milwaukee Brewers’ senior vice president of player development, will serve as the No. 2 baseball executive under newly hired president of baseball operations Taylor Smith.
The former college baseball coach has been with the Brewers since 2019 and is known for his work in pitching development. He played a key role in Milwaukee’s World Series championship last week.
The Athletics plan to move to Las Vegas in 2028, when they are scheduled to begin play in a new ballpark on the Strip. Bally’s Corp. is still trying to secure the needed funding to build a multilevel podium topped by a plaza at the $2.1 billion ballpark the Athletics are building on the south Strip.
In other roster moves, the A’s announced Friday that second baseman Jeff McNeil and left-handed starter Jeffrey Springs had their 2027 team options declined. The club also acquired outfielder Nate Eaton from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jareth Rayo.
Meanwhile, the Detroit Tigers and their co-defendants have responded in court to a lawsuit filed by Athletics player Zack Gelof, arguing they cannot be held legally responsible for his injury.
