Southern Nevada high school boys soccer playoffs open Monday with 5A Southern Region quarterfinals, followed by the 4A state first round and 3A Southern League play on Tuesday. Coronado and Palo Verde finished atop their respective 5A leagues for the second consecutive season, positioning both as frontrunners despite Coronado having to forfeit all wins and vacate its 2025 state title for reasons the school and NIAA did not disclose.
Coronado (16-1-3) graduated most of last year's championship roster but rebuilt behind Josh Pineda's team-high 14 goals and Micah Velazquez's 10 goals. The Cougars' defense allowed 20 goals in 19 games with eight shutouts. Palo Verde (14-4-3) handed Coronado its only loss this season and features a senior-led backline of Crew Simon, Mason Feeley and Haydn Rodrigues that surrendered 21 goals in 21 games. O'Brian Vera (10 goals) and Parker Turner (nine goals) pace the Panthers' attack.
The 5A bracket sets up potential rematches. Eldorado visits Arbor View in a quarterfinal Monday, with the winner likely facing Coronado in the semifinals; the Desert League rivals split two regular-season meetings, including a 1-0 Cougars win and a 1-1 draw. Palo Verde would meet either Liberty or Canyon Springs in the semis after losing to Liberty 3-1 and edging Canyon Springs 1-0 during the regular season.
Parity across 5A produced numerous close games and ties, raising upset potential in the postseason. In 4A, the championship picture is more open with four league champions: Centennial (Sky, 17-2-3), Clark (Mountain), Doral Academy (Desert) and Sunrise Mountain (Lake). Centennial went unbeaten in league play and owns a win over 5A's Palo Verde, while Spring Valley (13-0-3) remains undefeated overall and beat Centennial earlier this season.
