The Milwaukee Brewers survived a dramatic ninth inning to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night. Closer Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to end the game, but only after a video review overturned an apparent game-ending double play. Replays showed shortstop Cooper Pratt's foot came off the bag on a high throw from second baseman Brice Turang, keeping the inning alive and bringing the tying run to the plate.
Milwaukee captain Christian Yelich described the emotional swing of the final moments. "You have a big range of emotions," Yelich said. "It's a big credit to Trev for locking back in right there and making some huge pitches after you have that emotional dump and then have to get back on it." Megill had allowed consecutive singles and a walk to load the bases before Hicks grounded to Turang, whose throw initially appeared to end the game.
Starter Jacob Misiorowski earned the win, allowing one run and four hits over five innings. He opened the game with the fastest pitch ever recorded in a World Series. Abner Uribe and Aaron Ashby bridged the gap with three scoreless innings of relief. Offensively, Yelich drove in a run with a triple during a two-run first inning, while Jackson Chourio and William Contreras each collected two hits. Contreras also threw out two runners attempting to steal.
The victory gave Milwaukee a 1-0 series lead in the first World Series since 1980 featuring two franchises seeking their first championship. The Brewers, playing in their first World Series game since 1982, benefited from extra rest after sweeping the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, allowing them to align their rotation for Misiorowski's start.
