Gloria Steinem devoted more than six decades to the fight for women's equality, emerging as one of the movement's most prominent voices. In the 1960s she entered the national spotlight after going undercover as a Playboy Bunny at New York City's Playboy Club, documenting the harsh conditions she faced while working there. Throughout her career Steinem was a powerful and outspoken advocate, confronting sexist ridicule and harassment from men during an era of widespread discrimination. Her activism yielded significant victories, most notably the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, which affirmed a woman's constitutional right to obtain an abortion. The same ruling later faced a major setback when it was overturned in 2022. Steinem passed away on Wednesday at the age of 92, according to a statement from her foundation; she never retired from her activism.
