VICTOR JOECKS: DOJ finds more noncitizens on the voter rolls

Federal prosecutors announced Monday they have charged 48 noncitizens across several states with election-related crimes, including illegal voting. Among them is Jullie Ann Sumalinog Moore, a Filipino national living in Nevada, who faces one count of voting by an alien in the 2024 presidential election.

The announcement follows two earlier Justice Department releases this year detailing charges against 32 other noncitizens for election crimes. Those cases involved legal permanent residents from countries including Italy, Cuba, Mexico, Liberia, Nigeria, India and Venezuela. Earlier this month, Gaye Tyndale-Simpson, an undocumented immigrant from Jamaica, pleaded guilty to voting in the 2024 election.

In California, 67-year-old lawful immigrant Kamlesh Navnitlal Shah was charged with voting by an alien in a federal election. Shah told KCRA that no election official informed him he was ineligible to vote, saying the officer only asked for his ID and number. Shah said he believed he could vote because he possessed a Real ID.

The arrests come after the Department of Homeland Security warned Nevada officials that more than 15,000 noncitizens could be on the state's voter rolls. Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar downplayed the concerns, stating there are "numerous safeguards in place to prevent noncitizens, or anyone ineligible to vote, from casting a ballot."

Critics argue the recent charges demonstrate those safeguards have failed. In 2021, a Canadian citizen in Nevada reported receiving a voter registration card unsolicited after a DMV visit. Nevada voters will decide in November whether to add a voter ID requirement to the state constitution through Question 7.
