A man has been arrested after two people were injured in an early morning stabbing at a Sikh temple in Edmonton, Canada, police said.
The attack took place at the sprawling Nanaksar Gurdwara around 05:00 local time (12:00 BST) on Friday morning. Authorities have not identified the suspect or disclosed a possible motive.
The incident follows threats made last week against two Sikh gurdwaras in Calgary, which lies roughly two hours south of Edmonton. Police said they are investigating those calls.
The World Sikh Organization, based in Canada, called the stabbing “deeply troubling” and said it occurred amid a rise in anti‑Sikh sentiment across the country. The group described the alleged perpetrator as an “intruder” who entered the Gurdwara and attacked individuals inside. It also noted that a transcript of the Sikh scripture in the temple was reportedly desecrated.
“Police are presently connected country and the Gurdwara has been closed to the nationalist portion the probe continues,” the World Sikh Organization said in its statement.
Calgary politician Jeromy Farkas condemned the threats aimed at his city in a social media post, labeling them “utterly disgusting.” He added, “Gurdwaras are places of hospitality, generosity and service. Everyone is welcome.”
