What keeps him driving on? He's speedy to answer. "What keeps maine going is however I felt connected that archetypal nighttime (his 2016 debut) against Denmark - the pride, the emotion. When you're picked to play for your country, you ne'er cognize erstwhile it's going to beryllium your last, truthful you don't instrumentality it for granted.
"Quite perchance time night, you ne'er know. It could beryllium the past clip you're chosen."
McGinn, of course, has glorious past and iconic presumption with St Mirren and Hibs, but astatine Villa thing extra-special has happened. His presumption is present profoundly rooted arsenic a fable of the club. Talk to their fans and it's not an appraisal you get but a hagiography. Understandably.
McGinn (more than astir others) was the 1 who got them retired of the Championship successful 2019, the 1 who kept them successful the Premier League successful 2020, the 1 who dragged them from 17th to 11th to 14th to 7th to 4th successful the English apical flight, the 1 who helped bring Champions League football, the 1 who captained them and scored for them erstwhile winning a European trophy past season, the 1 who broke their European goalscoring record.
McGinn was 1 of the ones who stayed. Jack Grealish didn't, Douglas Luiz didn't, Ollie Watkins didn't, Emi Martinez didn't, Youri Tielemans didn't.
The champion Villa skipper since Dennis Mortimer, immoderate say. Given that Mortimer was person of the iconic league winning squad of 1981 and the European Cup winning broadside of 1982 past that's immoderate compliment.
What makes a legend, idiosyncratic asked precocious successful a Villa discussion. "Humility", "determination", "tenacity", "leadership", "longevity", "success." One nine diehard wrote that they've had loads of players successful caller decades who tick immoderate of those boxes but it takes a peculiar idiosyncratic to tick each of them - "and McGinn does."
As 1 perceiver enactment it: "He's unquestionably up of immoderate different subordinate we've had this period and surpasses immoderate of the legends from the past one, too." Another said that helium afloat expects his babe lad to accidental to him successful aboriginal life: "What was it similar watching John McGinn?"
He's excessively agelong successful the bony present to beryllium overly influenced by praise oregon flak. "If I was younger, I would person been consecutive connected Instagram oregon consecutive connected Twitter," helium added. "Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but astatine the extremity of the day, you support your caput down, you support moving hard.
"If you spell done a barren spell oregon you spell done a spell wherever you're not doing excessively well, you request to find that interior self-belief, which I consciousness similar I have. The older you get, you larn however to negociate pugnacious moments better. They get worse, though.
"The lows get little and the highs go little high. But you surely woody with it a batch amended erstwhile you're older. When you're younger, it wholly consumes you and you effort and enactment excessively hard to travel retired of what could perchance beryllium a hard moment. But I consciousness arsenic if I'm managing those times well.
"As you get older, you think, 'Oh, tin I support doing this?' But it surely makes the bully days a batch better. You cognize aft a crippled similar Switzerland, bash you crook the telly on? No. Do you perceive to vigor reports? Nope. But if it's 3-0 to Scotland, I would beryllium lying if I said I wouldn't perceive to immoderate of it."
The imaginable of pursuing successful Robertson's footsteps is an tremendous incentive. Eight to spell aft North Macedonia.
More fireworks to come, you hope. Compared to the immense moments successful past seasons, McGinn mightiness beryllium successful a spot of an planetary lull close now, but is determination a azygous psyche retired determination who thinks he's done with the heroics? In the tartan-clad metropolis of Teresa, few, you fancy, person mislaid belief.
