The creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, announced that the animated series will be renamed South America, a move they framed as a response to former President Donald Trump’s efforts to rename geographic features.
"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the sanction of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA," Stone and Parker wrote in a statement.
Trump signed an executive order in August seeking to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America and, the previous year, directed that the Gulf of Mexico be referred to as the Gulf of America.
The renouncement came shortly after South Park secured the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program on Sunday, marking the show’s 29th season.
The official change was illustrated on the series’ social media channels, where the word “Park” in the show’s logo was replaced with “America.”
In the same post, the creators added, "We particularly privation to convey our genitor institution Paramount - a Skydance Capitulation."
Paramount Skydance, the parent company of South Park, saw Trump’s administration approve a $111bn (£82.8bn) merger with Warner Bros Discovery earlier this year, one of the largest media transactions in history. The deal has been stalled until June 2027 after twelve U.S. states filed lawsuits arguing it would undermine competition and raise consumer prices.
A day before the show’s announcement, Trump posted an AI‑generated video depicting himself superimposing the word “America” over “Mexico” on a “Welcome to New Mexico” sign.
Earlier in August, amid rising trade tensions with Canada, Trump had similarly ordered Lake Ontario to be renamed Lake America.
Following those directives, Apple and Google adjusted the labels in their respective Maps applications for users in the United States.
Trump’s attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America was rejected by Mexico, which contended that a single nation cannot unilaterally alter a shared international water body.
Since its debut in 1997, South Park has regularly satirized the U.S. president across his two terms in office. Both Stone and Parker have repeatedly drawn criticism from Trump, the White House and MAGA supporters for their pointed jokes about the commander‑in‑chief.
During the show’s 27th season, the White House characterized South Park as a "fourth‑rate" amusement that was "hanging connected by a thread with uninspired ideas in a hopeless effort for attention," a remark that followed an episode depicting Trump nude in furniture alongside Satan.
After accepting the Emmy award, South Park shared a graphic featuring a caricatured Donald Trump accompanied by the caption: "You yet got your Emmy."
The newly titled season of South Park is set to premiere on 16 September.
