Prep football recap: Playoff matchups set for CCSD independent teams

The Clark County School District independent football teams have finalized their playoff matchups for the inaugural Superintendents Cup, with seeds decided on the field during the final week of the regular season. In Division III West, Cimarron-Memorial earned the No. 1 seed with a 39-0 shutout over Rancho, while Bonanza secured the No. 2 seed with a 27-6 win against Western. In Division II East, Basic claimed the No. 1 seed after a 38-18 home victory over Silverado, and Palo Verde took the No. 2 seed following a 63-0 win over Canyon Springs.

Coaches praised their teams’ performances, with Cimarron-Memorial’s Shane Kaine saying, “The feeling was phenomenal … They definitely played their tails off going into league play,” and Basic’s Jeff Cahill noting, “That was awesome … That was our speech to them in the locker room with everything on the line. That’s our first division title since 2023.” Liberty’s Rich Muraco added, “I think it was awesome … I think most schools really enjoyed the format.”

The postseason format features crossover games (semifinals) this Friday at 7 p.m., where the top two teams from each league in each division will compete for the Superintendents Cup. Losers of those games, along with teams finishing third through fifth, will play consolation games in the final two weeks. The structure was created by CCSD principals after moving football programs to independent status from the NIAA, allowing an in-season tournament within the 10-game limit for independent teams, which are not eligible for NIAA-sanctioned state titles.
