Rohan Dennis pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified after police pulled him over last month.

Australian Olympic cyclist Rohan Dennis has pleaded guilty to driving in defiance of a five‑year ban imposed after a 2023 crash that killed his wife, Melissa Hoskins. Dennis, 36, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Friday to answer a charge of driving while disqualified after police stopped him last month while he was travelling with two children as passengers. Last year he received a suspended jail term after pleading guilty to one aggravated count of creating the likelihood of harm under a plea agreement that saw prosecutors withdraw two more serious charges. The court found Dennis not criminally liable for Hoskins’ death but deemed his actions reckless. During the earlier hearing, the court heard that the couple – married in 2018 – had been arguing about home renovations before Dennis got into his car to leave. Hoskins, also an Olympic cyclist, jumped onto the bonnet of the vehicle and later clung to the car door as Dennis continued to drive. She fell off and was subsequently struck by the car, later dying in hospital from her injuries. Dennis avoided incarceration when sentenced last May; the judge suspended the 17‑month prison term by placing him on a two‑year good behaviour bond. He was also barred from driving for five years, with the disqualification taking effect from the date of the December 2023 incident. On Friday prosecutors told the tribunal they have asked for the matter to be referred to the District Court to address both the driving‑while‑disqualified offence and Dennis’s alleged breach of the good behaviour bond. The father‑of‑two is due back in court in September.
