Four seats on the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents are up for election this November. The 13-member board governs the state's four community colleges, three universities and a research institute, setting policies, approving budgets and hiring top administrators.
In District 5, which covers areas east of downtown Las Vegas and part of southern North Las Vegas, Stephanie Molina leads former state senator Moises "Mo" Denis with 54.7% to 45.3% in preliminary results. Both candidates advanced from a June primary that ousted incumbent Patrick Boylan, who faced criticism over comments about transgender athletes at a 2024 board meeting but did not resign.
Incumbents hold early leads in the other three contested races. In District 2, west of downtown, appointed Regent Jennifer McGrath leads challenger Patrick L. Villa 60.5% to 39.5%. McGrath has held the seat since a 2025 appointment by Gov. Joe Lombardo following the death of Regent Lois Tarkanian.
Board Chair Byron Brooks leads Erik Swendseid 61% to 39% in District 3, which includes UNLV and parts of the Strip. In rural District 8, spanning northern Clark County and six other counties, Regent Pete Goicoechea holds a narrow 50.4% to 49.6% edge over Lori Lane.
