No. 1 Bishop Gorman can’t dig out of 20-point deficit in loss to Florida team By Bill Daley Special to the Review-Journal August 29, 2026 - 4:16 pm FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A 20‑point first‑half shortage proved too much for the Bishop Gorman squad to overcome. The Gaels, ranked No. 1 nationally by MaxPreps, fell behind early and could not rally in a 33‑28 loss to Christopher Columbus (Florida) on Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas High School, part of the Broward County National Football Showcase. Columbus took a 20‑0 lead in the second quarter. Bishop Gorman quarterback Ace Amina threw two touchdown passes in the second quarter, trimming the halftime gap to 23‑15. The highlight of the opening half was a 74‑yard touchdown reception by Michael Blackmond from Amina as the clock expired. Columbus added a fourth‑quarter touchdown pass from Kai Moore to Tony Brown III, stretching the advantage to 30‑15. On the ensuing kickoff, the Explorers recovered a Gorman fumble. Columbus safety A’mir Sears intercepted Amina three times during the game. Amina later connected with Aizen Costales‑Torres for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and the Gaels recovered the ensuing onside kick with Columbus leading 33‑21. Amina then found Azavier McDaniel for another score, narrowing the margin to 33‑28, but Columbus secured the following onside kick. The contest was delayed by an hour because of lightning, halted early in the fourth quarter after another lightning delay, and remained stopped for roughly an additional 45 minutes. Bishop Gorman is scheduled to face Lone Peak (Utah) on Friday. The Gaels defeated Lone Peak 35‑14 last year at home in a game that was called in the third quarter after multiple Lone Peak players entered the field during a sideline altercation.
