Las Vegas elementary teacher dragged special needs student 3 times, police say

Marianna Wynn, a 63‑year‑old teacher at Diaz Elementary School, was taken into custody on Friday and charged with battery on a protected person, the Clark County School District announced Monday. Wynn, who instructs a classroom for students with intellectual disabilities and has been employed by the district since July 2024, was arrested at the school after surveillance footage showed her dragging a student by the back collar of his shirt shortly after 11:55 a.m. According to police, after moving the first child she seized a second student by the shirt collar. School records indicate the first student has autism and Down syndrome and is described as “extremely limited in his ability to communicate and provide for himself.” Later that day, Wynn dragged the same special‑needs student again after he entered a classroom; the boy then moved to another room, where she pulled him by his shirt a third time, the report states. Wynn declined to speak with investigators, saying she would not answer questions without her union representative present. The district placed her on paid leave in accordance with the negotiated agreement with her union. Her next court appearance is set for September 22, as shown in Las Vegas Justice Court records.
