Gianni Infantino will remain as Fifa president after he receives the backing of senior executives in a meeting in Morocco.

Gianni Infantino will remain FIFA president after receiving the backing of senior executives at a meeting in Morocco on Wednesday. Infantino convened the audit committee at FIFA’s Africa bureau in Rabat amid growing criticism of his abandoned plan to sell off commercial and legal operations to private investors. At the gathering, UEFA said it had lost confidence in Infantino, describing the FIFA Forward Enterprise arrangement as a “shabby, backroom, opaque deal.” Criticism has also surfaced from within FIFA, notably from audit chief Mattias Grofstrom, who attended Wednesday’s session. In an internal memo sent to FIFA staff on Tuesday, Grofstrom wrote that the situation is “a bittersweet and reproachable sequence of events.” Following the meeting, however, Grofstrom and the management committee issued a statement saying they “reaffirmed their full support” for Infantino as president. More to follow.
