A Kissimmee, Florida woman was taken into custody Friday morning at Harry Reid International Airport after Osceola County deputies accused her of leaving her four children unsupervised for several days while she traveled to Las Vegas. Irene Miller, 50, faces four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm.
The investigation began Oct. 21 when a juvenile called 911 around 8:30 p.m. to report her 9-year-old brother had been hurt by a dumbbell that fell on his head. Responding deputies found the four children — ages 14, 12, 11 and 9 — alone in the home. The boy was treated at a hospital and released.
Miller told deputies by phone she had been in Las Vegas since Oct. 18 for work and planned to return Oct. 23. She said she had arranged for a babysitter from Tampa to visit mornings and afternoons but not stay overnight. The children's father took custody of all four.
Detectives met Miller as she exited her flight Friday and booked her into the Orange County jail. "The Osceola County Sheriff's Office will not tolerate child neglect. These cases will be investigated, and charges will be brought against the parents who are not properly supervising or caring for their children," Sheriff Chris Blackmon said.
