Fifa opens disciplinary proceedings against Argentina

FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Argentina following the team's conduct after its 1‑0 defeat to Spain in July at New York New Jersey Stadium. Last week, the FIFA governing body appointed a disciplinary and ethics official to review what occurred after the final whistle, when Argentina players, backroom staff and Spain players were involved in altercations. On the prosecutor’s recommendation, FIFA will examine Argentina players Nahuel Molina, who faces two charges, and Leandro Paredes, who faces three charges, as well as assistant manager Roberto Ayala, who faces one charge, for alleged violations of Article 14 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code. Molina may also be subject to disciplinary action for one count of unsporting behaviour under the same provision. Argentina teammate Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are likewise accused of the same offence. Under the FIFA Disciplinary Code, unsporting behaviour carries a minimum sanction of a one‑match suspension, while assault incurs a minimum of three matches.
