Ex-girlfriend in alleged gold-digging plot targeting Gavin Maloof to be sentenced

Jennifer Courtemanche, who admitted to plotting to steal from Gavin Maloof while they were dating, is scheduled to be sentenced tomorrow in Clark County District Court. She previously pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of conspiracy to commit theft and agreed to sign a criminal confession of judgment and pay Maloof nearly $445,000 in restitution. Maloof stated in a written victim impact statement that her 'deliberate betrayal' caused him 'profound emotional and psychological harm.'

According to court records, a Clark County grand jury had indicted Courtemanche on multiple felony charges, but those will be dropped as part of a June plea agreement. Prosecutors said they will not oppose probation if she provides proof of full restitution payment, which would allow her to withdraw her plea and have the case dismissed. Her co-defendant, Brittany Burgess, also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft and agreed to pay $11,652 in restitution, with prosecutors likewise not opposing probation.

The scheme involved accessing Maloof’s cell phone through deception to send Apple Cash payments to accounts controlled by the women. Police said the first transaction occurred in June 2021, and text messages between Courtemanche and Burgess revealed discussions about the plan, including Courtemanche saying she was with Maloof during a transaction and 'trying so hard not to laugh.' The investigation began after Maloof received harassing texts and photos from VoIP numbers.

Maloof wrote that Courtemanche was his longtime girlfriend, had spent time with his family, attended his mother’s wedding, and that he trusted her completely. He said, 'While standing beside me as my partner, she was secretly stealing from me and orchestrating an elaborate scheme to deceive me,' adding that the betrayal changed how he views trust and relationships.
