Former Formula 1 chief Bernie Ecclestone, 95, said he was stopped and questioned by four police officers and customs officials at Tires Aerodrome in Cascais on Monday after arriving from Switzerland. He denied being arrested, describing the Portuguese authorities as “very helpful.”
Ecclestone told the Press Association he had to “surrender” the shotgun he was carrying because he lacked the correct import documentation. He said he intended to compete in a clay pigeon shooting event in Portugal.

He added that he approached the officers and asked, “What can I do for you?” to which they replied, “We would like some information on this weapon you brought in.”
“I went to spot the constabulary and said, 'What tin I bash for you?' And they said, 'We would similar immoderate accusation connected this weapon you brought in'.”
Ecclestone noted he had previously transported the shotgun from England to Switzerland and expected no issues, as airport staff know him “very well.”
Nevertheless, upon arrival he was detained for roughly an hour and instructed to hand over the firearm due to missing paperwork.
He emphasized that this marks the second occasion he has faced airport difficulties involving firearms. In 2022, he was arrested in Brazil for illegally carrying a weapon while boarding a private jet to Switzerland and was ordered to pay 6,000 Brazilian reals (£1,000) to local authorities.
