College football prediction: James Madison still good bet vs. Troy

The midweek college football slate continues Thursday with a Sun Belt matchup between Troy and James Madison kicking off at 4:30 p.m. Both programs enter the game trying to recover from unexpected defeats last week.

James Madison fell 34-31 in overtime at Appalachian State despite outgaining the Mountaineers 423-366. The Dukes converted just 20 percent of their third downs and saw a potential game-winning drive stall in overtime after an 11-yard loss led to a missed field goal. Coach Billy Napier chose to kick the extra point with three seconds left in regulation rather than attempt a two-point conversion for the win.

Troy's loss was more jarring, as the Trojans dropped a 21-14 decision at home to UL Monroe after entering as 13½-point favorites. The Warhawks scored 18 fourth-quarter points to secure their first FBS victory since September 2025. Troy managed only 200 total yards and 3.08 yards per play against a defense that had allowed nearly 6.87 yards per play entering the game.

Quarterback Goose Crowder completed just 6 of 14 passes for 50 yards while playing through an injury that had him listed as questionable. Leading rusher Gavin Griffin gained 39 yards on 11 carries, and top receiver TK Keyes did not play. Significant money moved toward UL Monroe after Troy's injury report was released.

Despite the setback, James Madison remains ranked among the top 40 nationally in several metrics and continues to excel defensively against the run. The Dukes view the quick turnaround as a chance to bounce back and strengthen their postseason resume.
