The annual College Football by the Odds win‑total projection wraps up, portraying the ACC as the nation’s most uneven conference this season.
Las Vegas sportsbooks list Miami at –180 (risk $180 to win $100) to capture the ACC crown in preseason futures, implying a better‑than‑60 percent chance after the vig is accounted for.
That lofty outlook arrives despite the Hurricanes never having won an ACC title in the 22 years since they joined the league.
The program’s most recent conference crown came the year before, in 2003, when they won the Big East before falling as 11.5‑point favorites to Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game.
Miami returned to the College Football Playoff picture last season and even produced a game‑winning drive attempt in the final two minutes, but only after failing to qualify for the ACC Championship Game. A five‑way tiebreaker for second place in regular‑season play ultimately favored Duke, which then displaced first‑place Virginia to claim the trophy.
The ACC altered its rules this season to better reward a team like Miami, a change that may help explain why its odds have skyrocketed to this level.
Still, are the Hurricanes truly deserving of this position after two decades of league disappointment? And which teams could mount a serious challenge?
Read below for handicaps of each ACC team’s win total. Lines are the best available on the chosen side currently offered in Las Vegas, with the sportsbook noted and picks labeled in one of three confidence categories — plays, leans and guesses. This was my worst league in this series a year ago, as I went 8‑9 on win totals (2‑3 on plays, 3‑1 on leans and 3‑5 on guesses).
Boston College (over/under 3.5 wins)
The betting market paints a bleak picture for the Eagles, and it’s easy to see why given a roster largely built from lower‑level transfers, led by newcomer Mason McKenzie from Division II Saginaw Valley State. Boston College did win seven games just two seasons ago; the most likely outcome this year is a 4‑8 record, so taking either side of that number offers value. Guess: Over 3.5 wins at +115 (BetMGM)
California (over/under 6.5 wins)
California may have some roster holes — particularly in the secondary and running back groups — but looks deceptively solid at most premium spots. Keeping an NFL‑prospect running back in Jaron‑Keawe Sagapolutele
