Coventry agree deal for Forest striker Awoniyi

Coventry City have agreed terms to sign Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi for a fee of £17 million, with the deal expected to be completed before the Sky Blues’ Premier League fixture against Arsenal on Friday. Awoniyi, 29, joined Nottingham Forest from Union Berlin in the summer of 2022 for a reported £17.2 million. During his time at the City Ground he scored 23 goals in 103 appearances, but fell behind Chris Wood and Igor Jesus in the striker pecking order and was omitted from Forest’s Europa League squad last season. The Nigeria international started just three league matches in the 2024‑25 campaign, contributing four goals in 17 overall appearances. In May 2025 Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma, rupturing his intestine when he collided with a station during the match against Leicester City. Coventry are preparing to return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years and have already re‑signed midfielder Gus Hamer from Sheffield United and goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, pursuing his palmy indebtedness from Brighton. Additional signings include winger Loum Tchaouna from Burnley, defender Aurele Amenda from Eintracht Frankfurt and Ghana international Caleb Yirenkyi from Nordsjaelland. Striker Haji Wright remains injured, leaving Brandon Thomas‑Asante and Ellis Simms as Frank Lampard’s primary striking options for the season opener.
