Chelsea agree £47.1m move for Monaco's Camara

Chelsea have agreed a £47.1 million fee to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, the 22‑year‑old set to undergo a medical after the club’s sale of Enzo Fernandez to Manchester City for a British‑record £125 million. Initially reluctant to meet Monaco’s valuation, Chelsea are believed to have eased their demands once the proposed transfer of striker Folarin Balogun to Everton from the French side fell into doubt. The Blues viewed the move as an opportunistic capture of one of their primary midfield targets at a reduced cost, having also held talks with Roma’s Manu Kone and an unnamed Premier League alternative. Chelsea stress that Camara is not a like‑for‑like replacement for Fernandez, offering a different midfield profile, but maintain the deal will bolster the squad under new head coach Xabi Alonso. The club says it has achieved its summer objective of building a stronger side despite selling Fernandez to a direct rival, pointing to the club‑record £117 million acquisition of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, the signing of centre‑back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and the recent arrival of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, also from Aston Villa. Additional summer arrivals include strikers Emmanuel Emegha and Danny Welbeck, winger Geovany Quenda, midfielders Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco, and full‑backs Marco Palestra and Pep Chavarria. Under Alonso, Chelsea have won all three of their opening fixtures, defeating Fulham and Brighton in the Premier League and advancing to the third round of the Carabao Cup with a victory over Luton Town.
