Harry Reid International Airport is preparing for a multibillion-dollar overhaul to expand from 39 to an estimated 65 gates, reconfigure terminals and improve traffic circulation. The project aims to increase capacity and enhance the passenger experience as Las Vegas sees continued visitor growth and hosts major events.
Airport officials say the current facilities, particularly in Terminal 1, were built for the air travel demands of the 1990s and early 2000s and are now outdated. Clark County Director of Aviation James Chrisley said, 'Reid was built for a different era of air travel,' adding that the airport must evolve to meet today’s demands and prepare for future growth.
The renovations will be carried out in phases to allow construction to proceed while the airport remains operational. Officials view the Reid modernization as a bridge to a potential future two-airport system, with a second commercial airport in the Ivanpah Valley still at least a decade away.
