'Body in suitcase' found in Australia turns out to be lifelike doll

Police in New South Wales initially treated a suitcase discovered beside a road near the tiny locality of Oallen as a possible homicide after two men reported the find. The case was later reclassified after forensic examination showed the contents to be a lifelike doll rather than human remains. The suitcase was located approximately 230 kilometres (143 miles) south‑west of Sydney. According to authorities, the two men came across it while taking a break during a weekend road trip and promptly notified police. On Monday, the Hume Police District announced a homicide investigation, prompting heightened public interest. Hours later, investigators retracted the announcement after forensic analysis determined that the items inside the suitcase were not human. Superintendent Linda Bradbury of the Hume Police District explained, “The contents in the suitcase were mistaken for a human originally, so they are very realistic in terms of looking like human remains,” and added, “But we've confirmed by different means that they are not.” Bradbury emphasized procedural caution, stating, “The thought is to not disturb crime scenes as much as possible, to preserve the integrity of our investigation,” and noted she had “no regrets” about how the case was handled. She described the men’s reaction, saying it had been “quite a shocking discovery” for them, and elaborated, “Unfortunately, they were on a road trip as a lot of people do over the weekend and stopped for a break.” Bradbury praised their actions, noting the pair had made the “right decision” to report the find. She concluded, “They were upset yesterday and we will be in touch to let them know that it was not human remains.” Police have since closed their inquiries.
