Nevertheless, this situation creates a sliver of hope for Arsenal, because, as things stand, the only apparent route out of Madrid is a transfer to the Emirates Stadium. According to well‑placed sources, Alvarez’s stance has undergone a slight softening in recent days, although the shift is not yet sufficient to generate excitement at Arsenal. Should he change his mind in the final days of the transfer window, the Gunners are prepared to act. Since the beginning of the summer, BBC Sport sources have reported that Arsenal were assured Alvarez’s move to Barcelona was a non‑starter.
